What do salvaged windows and reclaimed school gym flooring have in common? For Bo Shepherd and Kyle Dubay, the co-owners of Detroit-based Woodward Throwbacks (@woodwardthrowbacks), these are the sustainable materials they build their business with. “We work with contractors and home renovators in the city to gather the materials that they would otherwise throw away,” says Bo. “We collect as much as we can to preserve the history in our city.”
In their 24,000-square-foot (2,230-square-meter) headquarters — a former car dealership — Bo and Kyle have a workshop, offices, space for a nonprofit tenant and a showroom for their handmade home furnishings. “Artists and entrepreneurs have taken a risk on the cheap real estate in Detroit to make their dreams a reality,” says Bo. “This is the only place in America where we could even begin to think about making a business. We’ve only been around for a little over four years, but we’re excited to be a part of the Detroit revitalization story.”
