Windows 10 May Learn to Automatically Remove Updates That Bork Your PC

563

Keeping the software on your computer up-to-date is an absolute must. It’s just too risky to go cruising around the Internet with unpatched vulnerabilities on your PC. Unfortunately updating isn’t always a trouble-free experience.

For example, there have been plenty of buggy Windows updates over the years. The most troublesome caused show-stopping problems that rendered PCs unable to boot.

There’s typically a way out, but fixing boot problems on a Windows system can be a complicated task. That may no longer be the case in the near future.

A support document that was recently published shows that Windows 10 PCs could soon be able to repair the damage automatically. It’s titled “Why were recently installed updates removed?”

The answer to that question: Windows 10 detected a startup failure, exhausted other automatic recovery options, and determined that the only way to get things back on track was to roll back the last batch of updates that were installed.

Windows Latest shared this image of the notification you’ll see if Windows 10 has to perform the repair:

Windows 10 will also freeze the problematic updates and postpone any attempts to re-install them for 30 days. Hopefully that grace period will give Microsoft (and its OEM partners) enough time to identify the problem and ship a revised update that won’t render your system unusable.

This could help smooth out some bumps in the Windows Update process, and that’s a very big deal. Microsoft wants to make sure that every Windows 10 computer is always fully patched.

Teaching Windows 10 to fix itself could help prevent users from becoming frustrated with the update process and deciding to pull the plug on Windows Update. That can be a very dangerous situation. All it takes is one vulnerable system to expose an entire network to a devastating cyber attack.
